Quote: British Army veteran Paul Edwards set himself a challenge to raise badly needed funds for two charities: the Historic Army Aircraft Flight (HAAF) and the Army Flying Museum. Both are unfunded and rely on donations or entrance fees to function. COVID lockdowns left their funds depleted and Paul hopes to raise £20,000 to help them bounce back. Paul’s personal challenge is to climb the three highest peaks in the UK (Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis) each twice and Snowdon a third time at night, climb Mount Kilimanjaro, then dive off the coast of Tanzania to a depth of 100ft. At 19,350 ft Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and the world’s highest free-standing mountain. Severe altitude sickness is the highest risk when climbing Kilimanjaro. So far, he has climbed Ben Nevis twice, Scafell 3 times (plus other peaks on the eastern approach) and Snowdon 6 times including a night ascent “off the line of march” with his son John after the Group ascent was cancelled. Last week he renewed his diving qualification by taking a full PADI Open Water Dive Course with Scuba Steve’s Dive Centre/Dive Saint Lucia to ensure he was fully up to date and current before conducting the deep dive as part of a PADI Deep Dive course and/or with an instructor. Previously an Army helicopter pilot he said: “I wouldn’t strap in and fly an aircraft if I hadn’t flown for 6 or 7 years, divers need to be current too and now I am thanks to the excellent team at the dive centre”. On 6th June he will return to Scafell Pike for another 2 ascents before doing a further night ascent of Snowdon 21/22 August. By then he will have climbed over 50,000ft. He departs for Tanzania on 8th September where he will be joined by his son John to climb Kilimanjaro and to dive afterwards. He describes his age as “north of 65” and he’s carrying a lot of injuries.
